Jury Service
When co-op members are called up to attend jury service:
- We decide together whether can we afford for this co-op member to be away on this date and for the next two weeks. If it's critically bad, we come up with an alternative date for the member to take back to the courts to request a rescheduling. Fingers crossed.
- If the jury service goes ahead, the co-op will pay them a reduced after-tax wage that, combined with the loss of earnings allowance paid by the courts, will maintain the member's normal salary.
How it works
- Before the service begins, the co-op will issue the member with a certificate of loss of earnings so that they can be compensated the remaining fee by the courts.
- We tell the accountant to deduct the court's projected allowance from the member's pay packet for that month, assuming a two week period's associated allowance unless new information comes up. At current allowance rates this looks like a £648 deduction for the first two weeks. More details on the government website: https://www.gov.uk/jury-service/what-you-can-claim-if-youre-an-employee
- We can claim legal expenses from our Business Insurance provider for the salary we paid that was used up by jury service, by providing the relevant docs at the end of the service.
