Jury Service
The co-op will pay staff who attend jury service a reduced after-tax wage that, combined with the loss of earnings allowance paid by the courts, will maintain the member's normal salary. The co-op's business insurance policy later compensates the co-op for the salary money paid for the member to be away from work.
When co-op members are called up to attend jury service, we decide together whether can we afford for this co-op member to be away on this date and for the next two weeks. If it is infeasible, we will reply to the courts requesting the order is deferred. They normally understand and let it go.
Finances and accounting for paid jury leave
As per our Legal Protection Insurance policy, we can claim legal expenses for the salary we paid that was used up by jury service, by providing the relevant docs at the end of the service.

6 Jury service and court attendance
An insured person’s absence from work:
(a) to perform jury service
(b) to attend any court or tribunal at the request of the appointed representative
(c) to carry out activities specified in your identity theft action plan under insured incident Corporate identity theft protection.
The maximum we will pay is the insured person’s net salary or wages for the time that they are absent from work less any amount you, the court or tribunal, have paid them. We will reimburse you for net salary or wages that you have paid the insured person for that time, less any amount they have been paid by, or can recover from, the court or tribunal.
Before the service begins, the co-op will issue the member with a certificate of loss of earnings so that they can be compensated the remaining fee by the courts.
Then tell the accountant to deduct the court's projected allowance from the member's pay packet for that month, assuming a two week period's associated allowance unless new information comes up. At current allowance rates this looks like a £648 deduction for the first two weeks. More details on the government website: https://www.gov.uk/jury-service/what-you-can-claim-if-youre-an-employee
Then at the end of the jury service, we contact the insurance company and claim for jury service compensation, for the amount of money paid by the co-op to the staff member.
